We came on the overnight train from Bukhara, arriving at the very respectable time of 8 a.m. Khiva train station is east of the old centre, known as Ichon-Qala. So our pleasant walk to town accompanied the growing light on the walls, minarets, and domes.

14th century building. We booked it on AirBnB. Gorgeous character filled building in the heart of Giovanezza Old Town. To be honest, we only ended up in this wonderful coastal town because we found the accommodation!

Apparently, grape vines don't need a lot of soil to thrive. A healthy vine across the street, growing from what appears to be not much more than a crack between the road and the wall.

Practically a suburb of Shanghai, Zhujiajiao was a lovely day trip. The old town is set out along canals that join the rivers and the nearby lake, and these canals are crossed by numerous old atmospheric bridges. Sure, the weekend crowds were maddening, making the narrow bridges almost dangerous. Those hordes were the main reason we didn't stay longer, but we had a wonderful time there and it was a perfect contrast to days in downtown Shanghai.
