The squat Kalta Minor Minaret was destined to be much taller. The death of the sponsor meant work stopped, and the project never resumed.

There are numerous criticisms in books and on websites about the "Disneyfication" that is occurring to various monuments in Uzbekistan. This was not as bad as we expected (and not as bad as this photo might suggest). There was stirring music, culturally appropriate and not too loud, while the lights changed colour and "danced" along the rows of arches. That said, although I didn't reel in horror or disgust, I don't know if it added anything to our enjoyment. On other evenings, when it was simply lit, the subtle details were more prominent, and the overall feel was certainly more dignified.

We decided to skip the observation decks, and visit the bar of the Park Hyatt on the 87th floor of the Shanghai World Financial Centre. It was cheaper, we got two glasses of bubbles, and there were no queues.

Built by the Crusader Knights, Bodrum castle is now home to a fantastic series of museums, primarily focused on underwater archaeology.

Three towers, shaped like flames. And at night, the lights on them make pictures, rotating through Azeri flags fluttering, flames flickering, and patriotic flag bearers waving their flags. They are not projected, but lights on the building generate the images. Up close, though, you can not see the lights at all, and it looks like standard reflective building glass.

The towers may be about a thousand years old, but the atmospheric lighting is a more recent addition. Mestia, Georgia.
