A helicopter was brought in and used initially to survey the fire. Then a bucket was attached and it spent the rest of the day fighting the fire - starting with the front shown in the photo Torridon fire 5 The full Torridon fire series can be found here .

Torridon fire 8: Charred trees in Torridon

The fire didn't have a lot of strength, so was really just burning very dry material - note that only the bottom of these trees were caught. The full Torridon fire series can be found here .

Patrouille de France

27 Oct 2011 136
The French Air Force's aerobatic demonstration team. We saw them training in the south of France less than a week before this - later found out they are stationed at Salon-de-Provence, which explains why!

Red Arrows 4

This year we weren't actually at the airbase to watch the show. Rather, we saw it from the other side of the Eden Estuary at the end of the West Sands. This gives a different perspective to the display, which is designed to be viewed by people on the base. In this shot you can clearly see that not only do the pilots have to concentrate on avoiding each other, but they also have to change their smoke colour at the point of crossing. Much respect!

The Red Arrows - missing one

27 Oct 2011 129
This is a poignant photo of the Red Arrows, as one plane is missing from the diamond nine formation. The team flew one plane short after team member Jon Egging tragically died in a crash during a show only a few weeks earlier. They decided to continue flying after this, but temporarily fly one plane short as a tribute.

Coming to the end of their display, this photo catches the team in V formation heading back to the base one last time. This photo shows them just off-shore from the end of the West Sands and Tentsmuir Sands (on the other side of the Eden Estuary).
