For years we had noticed a dead gnarled old cherry tree with a large bulbous bulge to its trunk, in a near neighbour's waste ground. Finally I saw him clearing the ground, cutting down the old tree. Happily he agreed to let me have "the bulge". A local sawmill picked it up, sliced it into several two-inch thick slices and delivered it back to my barn. There it will sit for another three years drying out, before they are turned into burred cherrywood coffee tables. The upper top slice looks like a dolphin silhouette so I will be interested to see what cabinet-maker son does with them in due course (2015?)
