Taken from outside of the Bright Water Visitor Centre at Kyleakin, The centre took its name from the title of the book 'Ring of Bright Water' by naturalist and author Gavin Maxwell. This was one of a trilogy of books about his life and adventures with otters. 'The Rocks Remain', another book in the trilogy, features Teko, one of the otters who lived with him, and is the subject of the sculpture above. It was presented to the centre by its sculptor, Laurence Broderick. Gavin Maxwell bought the disused lighthouse cottage on EILEAN BÀN (the White Island), which is a small island below the Skye Bridge, where he wrote, and also reared otters. He died in 1969 and Teko died shortly afterwards. Beyond the fence can be seen the remains of Casteal Maol, or Castle Maol, or Castle Moil as it is known.
