Rope Walk (PiPs)

17 Apr 2022 44 55 405
Taken at East Quay, Bridgwater on a lovely sunny day. The Rope Walk runs alongside the River Parrett to the town centre, the rope design snaking along the pavement, commemorating the ship building heritage of the town and associated rope making industry. The last ship to be built in Bridgwater, by F J Carver & Son was the 100 foot ketch the Irene, built in 1907, and she is still sailing today. I have added a track called 'The Long and Winding Road' by Paul McCartney as a nod to the winding of the rope trail www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFNaOm6U5n8 and as a tribute to 'The Irene' here is Eric Calpton with 'Goodnight Irene' www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0z2hKQ9Mvs

Cottages on a country road at Over Stowey on the Quantock Hills. Not a very big fence this week but I wanted to share this image and a little piece of the past. The middle cottage with the flowers around the door is the Old Forge building where, In 1932, Quantock weavers Norah Biddulph and Gladys Dickinson set up business spinning and weaving They used local wool and used natural dyes obtained from sources such as brambles, gorse and broom.. The link below provides a little more information . sawztwist.wordpress.com/tag/quantock-weavers My husband worked in the area and sometimes used to pop in to visit and chat with the ladies as they were sitting and spinning. My link here is 'Spinning Wheel' by Blood, Sweat and Tears www.youtube.com/watch?v=kK62tfoCmuQ and I have added a second link by Yarn - 'Easy Road' www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMvuer11a1k
