Der Vulkan Eldfell auf den Westmänner Inseln brach 1973 aus und stieß eine enorme Menge an Lava und Asche aus, welche die Stadt Heimaey, den Hafen und die ganze Insel bedrohte, so dass die Insel evakuiert werden musste. Die ausgedehnten Schlackefelder sind in den unteren Regionen mit dichten Lupinenfeldern bedeckt. Um die Bodenerosion zu stoppen, wurde diese Pflanzenart im 20.
