Angeregt durch die Ausgrabungen in Pompeji ließ König Ludwig I. diese ideale Nachbildung eines römischen Wohnhauses 1840–1848 durch den Architekten Friedrich von Gärtner errichten. Um zwei Innenhöfe, das Atrium mit seinem Wasserbecken und das begrünte Viridarium im rückwärtigen Hausteil, sind im Erdgeschoss die Empfangs- und Gästezimmer, die Küche und die Speisezimmer angeordnet. The reception and guest rooms, the kitchen and the dining room are arranged on the ground floor around two inner courtyards, the atrium with its water basin and the green viridarium in the rear part of the house. The white building on the right, which is picturesquely situated on a rock high above the Main, is the so-called breakfast temple (see note 2), which was built in 1782 by Emanuel d'Herigoyen.
