Diese etwa 5 cm große Raupe fand ich auf einem Blatt der Gewöhnliche Hundszunge (Cynoglossum officinale) fressend. Es handelt sich um die Raupe des Schmetterlings Brauner Bär (Arctia caja) , die seitlich weiße Flecken aufweist und deren Oberfläche mit ziemlich langen Chitin-Haaren überzogen ist, die im vorderen Bereich braunrot sind. Der Kopfbereich (siehe Notiz) ist nicht sichtbar, weil kurze braunrote Borsten wie ein Dach darüber ragen. Nach der Verpuppung schlüpfen im Juli auffällig gefärbte Nachtfalter S. Wikipedia-Artikel). Der Braune Bär ist in Deutschland geschützt und zählt zu den gefährdeten Tierarten. The brown bear is an endangered species and therfore protected in Germany. I am not aware of any toxic effect of the chitin hairs.
