Die Gletscherzungen ziehen sich immer mehr und schneller zurück und wenn das Abschmelzen mit dem bisherigen Tempo weitergeht, wird Island in ca. 200 Jahren eisfrei und damit grün sein, mit unabsehbaren Folgen für die Insel selbst und das Weltklima. Deshalb müssen Schiffe einen sehr großen Sicherheitsabstand einhalten, um nicht zu kentern, wenn Teile der Gletscherwand abbrechen und Flutwellen von bis drei Metern Höhe erzeugen. The glacier tongues are retreating more and more and faster and if the melting continues at the present rate, Iceland will be ice-free and thus green in about 200 years, with unforeseeable consequences for the island itself and the world climate. Therefore, ships must keep a very large safety distance to avoid capsizing if parts of the glacier wall break off and create tidal waves of up to three metres in height. Der See Jökulsárlón ist der bekannteste und größte der Gletscherseen in Island. Sein ruhiges, blaues Wasser ist mit Eisbergen aus der umliegenden Breiðamerkurjökull-Gletscherzunge durchzogen, die Teil des größeren Vatnajökull-Gletschers ist. Die Eisberge schimmern zum Teil blau, ein Teil ist mit schwarzer Vulkanasche bedeckt. Die Lagune fließt durch einen kurzen Wasserlauf in den Atlantischen Ozean und hinterlässt dabei Eisbrocken auf einem schwarzen Sandstrand. Zur Zeit der Aufnahme tummelten sich einige Seehunde in der Lagune (s. PIP 1) und ein Brautpaar fror bei seinem Fotoshooting (s. PiP 2). Im Vordergrund des Bildes sieht man Eiderenten. Its calm blue waters are covered with icebergs from the surrounding Breiðamerkurjökull glacier tongue, which is part of the larger Vatnajökull glacier. Some of the icebergs shimmer blue, others are covered with black volcanic ash. The lagoon flows through a short stream into the Atlantic Ocean, leaving ice chunks on a black sandy beach. At the time of the photograph some seals were swimming in the lagoon (s. PiP 1) and a and a bridal couple was doing photo shoots (s. PiP 2). In the foreground of the picture you can see common eiders.
