Cormorant back (Phalacrocorax carbo)

18 Mar 2009 196
Adult Cormorant from the back, with the water rolling off those lovely feathers. The pair I've watched all year have had no special marks on their heads like these, and I can find no mention of them having a 'winter/summer plumage' per say. Although these are not the most spectacular photos, I wanted to post this for a couple reasons. One being I'd like an ID on the type of Cormorant this actually is. I've looked and looked through miles of sites and photos and although he looks a lot like a double-crested cormorant, he also does not. (no white on the breast). Secondly there has been a pair of cormorants staying near the Shorden reservoir at Alexandra for over a year now, and if this happens to be the same ones in winter plumage, the family was out and about. I counted one adult and 4 young the day I took these.

I've never really understood the reason people love squirrels and hate rats, but I suppose there are circumstances they could become problems. This family lives quite cleanly off of any left overs the pigeons or squirrels leave.

Squirrels Can Swim...

But that doesn't mean they want to. I can't help but post this one. Right here's the scene: I'm walking up to the small Shornden reservoir where the Grey Heron stays in the willow tree.. behind a tree beside me I hear a splash, and assume its one of the flighty Moorhens taking off.. Seconds later this guy appears in the crux of the tree soaked. Top Right: Oh my god, I made it! Middle Right: Did you see that I nearly died!? Bottom Right: Oh lovely tree thank you god, thank you tree!! Left: You're not going to tell anyone about this are you, just keep it between you and me ok? I hope this guys ok, freezing cold and he falls in the water! I left him a large supply of nuts and cheerios to help warm him up. Best viewed large LoL
