There were loads of these guys, and I have a couple of pots of bramble on the balcony so this is one of the ones we put outside.
We also released about 70 on other wild places.

Reared Elephant Hawk Moth -Ella Face

Some folks may recall us finding a pupa of a moth in the beginning of April ( Large Pupa ) So we brought it home due to its unfortunate location in a wet muddy footpath and raised her.
We've kept her in dirt in a bug house with wire mesh sides, lightly misted her about every 2 - 3 days and in a cool dark room and she finally emerged today :D
What a fantastic face she has!

Plump and pink and flight tested we took her back to the location we found her at Filsham and let her go.

I really feel privileged to have been a part of this process with her.

What a sight it was to see her and know that she has matured and is going back to the wild and that we helped. We took her back to Filsham where we found her and let her fly off :)
Cooper is NOT Amused

There are two types of Copper Underwing and one of the ways to ID them is to look at the underside of the underwing. Cooper is not even slightly amused and couldn't care less about which underwing he is and is NOT cooperating. You really can't tell from this photo which underwing we have.

Copper Underwing Palps

One of the ways we found to diagnose Copper Underwing vs Svensson's Copper Underwing.
On the later the palps should be quite grey with yellow tips only, were as the Copper Underwing has more yellow palps all the way along.
As you can see here, a freshly emerged Copper Underwing can also have yellow tips, since we had the caterpillar and were able to make a positive ID of Copper Underwing.
Scruffy the Scarlet Tiger Caterpillar
31 May 2012 |
|
On July 5th, I found a Scarlet Tiger Moth over at Pebsham, brought her home to photograph and while she was with me she laid four eggs.
I took her back the next day and released her to lay the rest but decided to rear them.
