feathered fence post chicks

25 Nov 2010 65
Every year a Common Starling lays its eggs in the deep hollow inside an old gate post. We still use the gate, hence the bolts you see going through the post. You can see the whole fence post in this photo (yes, under the cat!), the eggs these chickies hatched from in this photo , and a shot of them freshly hatched here . In this photo they now have most of their feathers and are now squeezed tightly together inside the fence post (look closely and you can see their yellow beaks). When I look into the fence post, there is often one sitting on the fence bolt, presumably trying to get a little breathing space.

Here the chicks have just hatched (some are concealed by the fence brace) and are keen for food.
