Jennifer rushed me to South Gippsland Hospital in Foster. Dr Wayne came in to check it out. As he administered the horribly painful local anaesthetic by injection to my thumb the nurse held my held and barked at me "squeeze harder!" to distract me, and Jennifer sat cheek by cheek singing Dansons la capucine to me.

One moment I was cutting fat from the pancetta with Angelo's razor sharp knife, and the next it slipped (after two long days of work) and I heard a "thunk" as it hit the bone in my thumb. Is was as if my thumb ceased to exist. I knew I had done something bad, even though there was no pain.
