Moving Pigs 101

Nelly and Pjörk were almost through the gate but she would not cross the old borderline, even though we had removed this fence altogether. When we started to move forward, she bolted straight through our legs, each of us trying to catch her, like in some sort of vaudeville show. After many more attempts at coaxing, Ad and Fred eventually cornered her, and carrying her squealing to the other side. She took 10 minutes to recover herself, then started to graze with the others.

Nelly feeds them every evening, and they like her. Pjörk accepted some grain from Nelly (not from us! oh no!) and Nelly moved slowly backwards towards the gate...

Now we just had Pjörk to get across. Ad made the mistake of making a grab for her. He got her by the back leg but she escaped, and then she KNEW she was right! She grunted in a hell-raising sort of way and nothing we could do would get her near the fence again. Then, we did what we should have in the first place: we let Nelly do it

I got lots of grass and Fred laid it over the fence, so it was hidden, and then Hamela and, not longer after, Frikandella went over.

We tried herding, and we tried coaxing with grain, but they would NOT cross the fence line!

laid down the fence to the lower pig paddock - full of grass and lushnes - but the piglets were having none of that. They had learned to fear the white tape, and laid flat or not, it was NOT going to be crossed!

Txierri goes exploring

Having stopped to smell and eat the flowers, Txierri heads off down the driveway. I herded her back into the pig paddock where she contentedly dug a shallow hole and sat in it to cool down after her adventure.

Fonzie followed Txierri around the garden. Txierri wasn't bothered. Occasionally she would grunt a bit to her sisters, still inside their paddock, no doubt telling them how much more fun it was on the outside.

Txierri was obviously getting thirsty while out of her paddock and away from her water trough. She was pleased to discover the pond. The ducks were bemused.

We should never have given this piglet a Basque name (Txierri). She is waaaay too independent! Even though the three piglets have a whole paddock to themselves, she escapes every day and wanders over to the neighbours' paddock to graze and root about in the ground, or in our driveway, or in our garden. Usually she puts herself back into the paddock by evening to sleep with her two sisters (who behave and stay in their paddock).
