Phoenix learns how to dress chooks
07 Nov 2016 |

The Brennemans came for the weekend, and Phoenix seems to be going through a teenage blood phase (knives and crossbows are very interesting to him) so Ad killed and dressed a few chickens with him.

I love seeing the chooks of so many different ages all together in the chook house at this time of year.

Another hen with three chicks: one black, one white and one brown. Oh how poignant.
Aggie, her chicks and foster chicks

Our silver Wyandotte Aggie is such a good mum. She hatched 9 chicks and a few weeks later some older chicks (whose mum had decided they were old enough and left them) decided to move in with Aggie and her family. She has adopted them, and moved about the yard watching over her extended family, and at night they all gather around her, or under her.

Chicken Surprise

|
This hen managed to sit on her hidden nest of eggs in the woodshed for 3 weeks, braving all the noise and activity: one side of the shed being emptied and cleaned out (walking past her constantly); wood being chain-sawed next to her; and then loads of wood being carted in and stacked. She stuck to her eggs and today emerged with her brood of 13 chicks.
