"Jumping cat monastery" is the name most tourists use for Nga Phe Kyaung. The monks had taught the cats to jump through hoops for treats. They don't jump any more and in fact have become quite cynical about tourism. (The cats, not the monks.) You have to remove your shoes at temples and monasteries. As we removed ours, we watched as a black cat stalked up, inspected the shoes, selected a pair (not ours), back up, and sprayed it thoroughly. As it did so it looked up at us with a "so? wouldn't you?" look on it's face. I would have liked to see him jump, but I also couldn't blame him.

Nga Phe Kyaung - this is what we imagined when we thought of Burmese temples: dark with lots of gold leaf

Nga Phe Kyaung, the place formerly known as the"jumping cat monastery" where the cats no longer jump for you, but it is truly beautiful all the same.
