duckling nursery

We have had so many ducklings that we have made a separate section at the end of the duck pen especially for ducklings. There is finer wire along the bottom to stop them squeezing through, a pot on its side with hay for a warm shelter, water and food. They seem to be enjoying it. They'll be able to socialise with the ducks next door as well, before joining them at 5 weeks in the pond.

goose Tiny and her adopted ducklings

We released the 4 week old ducklings for a day on the pond, and to our surprise one of our geese, Tiny, immediately went to them and adopted them as her own. She made sure they stayed close to her, and defended them from us, the dogs, the other ducks, and even the other geese. They have decided she is a Good Thing, and stick close to her. (Mind you, there were five to start with, and the next morning there were only four.)
