Die Carretera Austral oder Ruta CH-7 ist ca. 1350 Kilometer lang und führt in Chile von Puerto Montt im Norden nach Villa O’Higgins an die Südgrenze der Región de Aisén. Der Bau der Straße ist noch nicht vollendet, weil weiter südlich das Gelände den Straßenbau fast unmöglich macht. Die folgenden Bilder werden die Fahrt über die gesamte Strecke zeigen, einschließlich 4 Fähren. Es wird immer wieder ein Stück asphaltiert, was zahlreiche Baustellen und Behinderungen ergibt, das richtige Carretera-Feeling gibt es aber nur auf den "originalen" Schotterabschnitten ;-))

Monte Fitz Roy (3405 m) is also called Cerro Chaltén and this word 'Chaltén' comes from a Tehuelche word meaning "smoking mountain", due to a cloud that usually forms around the mountain's peak.
