Morning in the valley of Rio Pinturas, seen from Cueva de las Manos upstream. In 2000 there were no tourists, no facilities, pure nature. In the meantime a visitor center and even a small airstrip has been built nearby. - scanned slide, Minolta X700

Cueva de las Manos (Spanish for Cave of the Hands or Cave of Hands) is a cave and complex of rock art sites in the province of Santa Cruz, Argentina, 163 km south of the town of Perito Moreno. It is named for the hundreds of paintings of hands stenciled, in multiple collages, on the rock walls. The art in the cave dates to between 11000 to 7500 BC, during the Archaic period of pre-Columbian South America, or the late Pleistocene to early Holocene geological periods. - scanned slides, Minolta X700

Northeast of Bajo Caracoles, where we spent the night in a tiny rudimentary hostel, we reached this beautiful valley by Ruta Provincial 101. Many archaeological and paleontogical sites are in this area, e.g. paintings of hands, made by the indigenous inhabitants, 9000 years ago. - scanned slide, Minolta X700
