Hipparchus was a mixed powered vessel and was built 1867 at Hebburn on Tyne. In the background there is the County of Peebles with 4 lower masts.
The brig‐rigged steamer was built by Andrew Leslie & Co. for the “Liverpool, Brazil and River Plate S.N.Co.Ltd.”. Her engine was built by R.Stephenson&Co., Newcastle upon Tyne (the same Stephenson of “ROCKET”‐ 1829 fame). With a mail contract from Antwerp to Brazil & the River Plate she was one of eight ships transferred to the wholly‐owned subsidiary “Societe de Nav. Royal Belge Sud‐American” and registered under the Belgian Flag from 1878. In 1894 she reverted back to the Liverpool register and was hulked at Valparaiso in 1895. Sold by Lamport & Holt on August 1st,
1915. Now rotting near Punta Arenas. Tonnage 1840 grt, dimensions 88.6 x 10.52 x 8.6 m, engine 1 x 2 cyl. compound engine, single shaft, 1 screw, power 170 i.h.p.
The PiP shows the ship from the other side 5 years before.
