The view from this wonderful place (about 2000 m) in the Landschitz valley leads to the highest peak of the "Niedere Tauern". You see the east face of Hochgolling, 2862 m, to the left the south ridge and the Trumörtenscharte (2442 m), a wonderful steep spring tour with snow gliders.

Niedere Tauern

The The "Lower Tauern" or "Niedere Tauern" are a mountain range of the Central Eastern Alps, in the Austrian states of Salzburg and Styria. The highest (higher than 2700 m) peaks are: 1. Hochgolling 2862 m 2. Hochwildstelle 2747 m 3. Roteck 2742 4. Kasereck 2740 m 5. Preber 2740 m 6. Große Barbaraspitze 2726 m 7. Weißeck 2711 m 8. Waldhorn 2702 m I visited all except the Kasereck, where I made three attempts and failed three times. All summits are part of the "Schladminger Tauern", only the "Weißeck" is situated in the "Radstädter Tauern". No. 3 and 5 are in the centre of this image, taken from Kasereck east ridge. The small lake down there has no name, but I call it "Arling Lake" because of the name "Arling" of the cirque. - scanned slide

Kasereck - 2740 m

30 Jun 2021 39 17 247
I tried to climb on this wonderful peak three times, and what a shame, I failed three times. The first time a heavy thunderstorm forced us to go back (East ridge), the second time we lost the route and it became too difficult (Southwest Wall) and the third time we were pretty high on the East Ridge, but it became late because we lost the way partly and again we had to go back. So I always have mixed feelings, looking at this mountain. This view shows the east side, seen from the Landschitz valley. Right of the Kasereck is the "Kaserscharte" (2315 m), which is a nice ski or snow glider tour in late spring.

Hundstein - 2614 m

05 Jul 2020 32 17 392
I'm back from 6 days in the "Niedere Tauern" in Salzburg and Styria. The Hundstein is a peak in the southern part of "Schladminger Tauern", which are the highest part of the "Niedere Tauern". These mountains were always my favorite area for hiking, ski and firn glider tours. I made this peak on 11.09.1985 (solo), but you can still be sure to be alone on this very remote mountain. The peak left of the Hundstein is the Mitterspitzen (2503 m). I added 2 scanned slides in the PiP's from 1985. It's a funny story, I reached the peak in loneliness, I met nobody the whole day. Suddenly a helicopter came and dropped 2 surveyors on the peak ;-) The 2nd PiP is a view from the peak to the north (Mitterspitzen, 2503 and Blutspitze, 2626 m), in the far background the "Hoher Dachstein".
