The Struve Geodetic Arc is a chain of survey triangulations stretching from Hammerfest in Norway to the Black Sea, through ten countries and over 2,820 km, which yielded the first accurate measurement of a meridian. This is the northernmost point and is situated at 70° 40′ 12″ North and 23° 39′ 48″ East, erected 1854.

This strange huge building, the so called Horseshoe Block, is situated near the lake Storvatnet, a km from Hammerfest. It was constructed for the workers of the frozen food company Findus, in the first half of the 1960s, designed by the architectural firm Astrup and Hellern. Altogether the building complex houses 124 flats of varying sizes.

70° 39′ 45″ North - Hammerfest claims to be the northernmost city in the world, but actually it isn't. Barrow in Alaska, population about 4000, is further north, but does not lay claim to the title of northernmost town.
