Banes is a municipality and city in the Holguín Province of Cuba. Banes was an important area for the native Taino people before the conquest by Columbus. A museum featuring the Taino culture is situated nearby.

On October 12, 1948, Fidel Castro Ruz and Mirta Díaz Balart were married in this unusual Art Deco church in the center of Banes. The first wooden church was built in 1910, what we see today, was built in 1948. After their divorce in 1954, during Castro's exile in Mexico, Mirta remarried and moved to Spain. Fidel and Mirta had one son, Fidel Castro Díaz-Balart (1949–2018), called Fidelito. He was a nuclear physicist and responsible for the construction of Cuba's only nuclear power plant "Juragura", which was never finished and is now abandoned.
