A well irrigated bit of the Arrous valley with most of the Jebel Mgoun ridge visible. From this angle it is easy to see which is the true summit.

In the Ait Bougamez valley near where we started our trek. The upheaval that created these completely vertical strata contrasts with the peaceful rural scene that now surrounds them.

ThreshingTechniques

An efficent non-mechanised threshing technique in the Ait Bougamez valley, but it can be a bit tricky keeping all of the ponies moving as they are very keen to take breaks for a snack.

Looking back to the mountain along our line of descent. The true summit is hidden further to the left.

Waterfalls are not a very common sight on this walk. This waterfall is from a minor tributary of the Arrous. There was also a slot canyon nearby which provided some very pleasant cool and damp shade.

Jbel Mgoun and Pasture

Summer grazing on the Tarkeddit plateau at around 2900m, with Jebel Mgoun 4069m in the background (summit towards left in far distance). The pasture makes a very fine and pleasantly cooler camp site.

TheEdgeOfThePlateau

The Tarkeddit plateau ends abruptly at its eastern end descending into the Arrous canyon.

After our successful ascent (and descent!) the crew feel like a celebration. Suitable instruments are improvised from bits of the camp kitchen equipment.

These flowers and the other two shots were all taken within a few metres of each other. There must be some sort of special microclimate that makes conditions more favourable than they appear.

Seemingly very fragile flowers growing amongst the loose rocks on Jbel Mgoun's northern slopes

GreenAndBrown

There is a lot of red and brown in Morocco, but this just makes the contrast with the ribbons of green that follow the watercourses even more striking.

Descending one of the great bowls on Mgoun's northern slopes, in amongst a field of broken rocks we came across several types of wild flower. I suspect that although the conditions are harsh the lack of browsing animals makes the most difference to their survival.

Wonderful walking along several km of broad ridge leading back from the summit of Jebel Mgoun.

Commuting is a bit different in the Atlas mountains.

Another view of the Jbel Mgoun ridge descending from the summit (also the same route up).

A reminder that mountain-building involves some pretty serious forces.

The villagers are generally very shy of cameras, but this child seemed quite unaware or was perhaps more interested in us, than avoiding a photograph.

EveningVisitor

One thing you can almost always be sure of when camping in Morocco is that you will be the evening entertainment for the locals. This is also entertaining for the visitor, but it can make finding a quiet spot for those essential camping ablutions somewhat difficult.
