Cerro Torre The Mountain

20 Jan 2007 1 186
The complex rock architecture of Cerro Torre (3128m). Not a particularly easy climb to the summit! In fact the first undisputed climb was only in 1974 and a previous claim dating from 1959 caused much controversy before being disproved as recently as 2005.

Glacial Blue

21 Jan 2007 156
Detail from the Torre glacier. I found it mesmerising to look into these mini-crevasses glowing with this wonderful blue light.

Perito Moreno Glacier

28 Jan 2007 119
These ice walls are around 60m high, extend for around 5km and advance at an average of 2m per day, but melt at the same rate. The very blue ice in the water had just 'calved' from the main glacier.

A Social Gathering

04 Feb 2007 149
Magellanic penguins at Cabo Virgenes, Patagonia, Argentina. It seemed as if they had gathered for a bit of a gossip. Fly to this location (Requires Google Earth )

Penguin Sentry

04 Feb 2007 134
This would perhaps have been better if I had got a little lower. However this Magellanic penguin was guarding its burrow and crouching down seemed to trigger its defensive instincts.

Elemental Blues

28 Jan 2007 153
Blue water, ice and sky. The Peritio Moreno glacier up close is spectacular. These ice walls are around 60m high and advance at an average of 2m per day, but melt at the same rate. +++ replaced with new version to remove cyan cast +++

Crossroads in the middle of nowhere

03 Feb 2007 104
A quick stop for fuel en-route between Los Glaciares in Argentina and Puerto Natales in Chile. The only signs of habitation seemed to be at these infrequent crossroads. Otherwise it is just miles and miles of Patagonian pampa. Fly to this location (Requires Google Earth )

Glacial Polishing

28 Jan 2007 150
Rock worn flat by glacial action. A texture not unlike a piece of wood.

Lago Toro

28 Jan 2007 149
We descend from the wild rock landscape of the upper Rio Tunel to this small glacial lake and more hospitable parts (and camp site) beyond.

Cerro Torre and Torre Glacier

21 Jan 2007 181
View of Cerro Torre from atop the Torre glacier, parts of which are made accessible to walkers with a set of crampons. Fly to this location (Requires Google Earth )

Crossing the Abyss

28 Jan 2007 145
Not an outstanding image, but it does show a rather exciting technique for river crossing known as a tyrolean traverse. We we attempting to get to the Paso del Viento after crossing the upper Rio Tunel, but unfortunately the weather changed and we were short of time so decided to head back not long after this crossing.

Cerro Torre In Situ

The view of Cerro Torre (on a good day) from Laguna Torre.

Cerro Fitz Roy in the Sky

14 Jan 2007 2 2 342
A fine view of the Fitz Roy group from near the Poincenot camp site. Patagonia

Cerro Torre Dawn

21 Jan 2007 1 1 314
Amazing fiery dawn alpenglow on Cerro Torre as the clouds rapidly gather around it. Well worth getting up before 5am for! No PS saturation trickery here - this is as close to the slide as I can manage, although it helps that I was shooting with Velvia.

Cerro Torre - Portrait

20 Jan 2007 2 276
Close up of the summit of Cerro Torre (3128m) - a seriously vertical bit of rock! The 'mushroom cap' is peculiar to these mountains. It is composed of aerated frost deposited from the moist and very frequent winds that blow over the summit. Fly to this location (Requires Google Earth )

Torre Glacier

20 Jan 2007 1 124
View of the Torre Glacier seen from Mirador Maestri. All looks fairly serene but there was a bit of a Patagonian 'breeze' at the time - i.e. it was just about possible to stand up!

Glimpse of Fitz Roy

14 Jan 2007 129
Our first tantalising glimpses of Cerro Fitz Roy close-up as we approach Laguna Piedras Blancas. Patagonia
