The very typical Moroccan village of Ighir n Tizgui. Square red houses with red rocks behind, contrasted against lush greens and the paler colours of the dry river bed.

The Long View

One advantage of the recent rain was the clear air. From this fine viewpoint we could clearly see the snow covered High Atlas on the left horizon, around 125km distant.

Fortified Door

A doorway to start the set and another to end. This looks to me a bit like something from Indiana Jones, but it is actually a doorway within a fortified granary (agadir) in the town of Anammet.

A Spot of Weather in Morocco

Not quite enjoying the view from the top of Jebel Aklim. It was very wet and quite cold. The summit is a plateau so finding a bit of shelter for refreshment wasn't that easy. It was also a challenge for our GPS-less guides who weren't used to navigating in very poor visibility. But with a few minor detours it wasn't long before we were descending to more hospitable climes and some mint tea!

Some valuable brushwood makes its way up a rocky path to the village in the next valley. I know whose job I would have!

Rock Contrasts

Photography in this lunar landscape is difficult, especially in full sunlight. You just have to try make the most of any rock forms and colours.

Jebel Aklim Approach
07 Mar 2007 |
|
Our approach to the formidable looking ramparts of Jebel Aklim, at 2531m the high point of our trek. At the time I don't think we realised how ominous the clouds were - after all this is Morocco and it hardly ever rains!

Not an especially photogenic village, but it did have some quite impressive terracing.

Around the Corner

A quite substantial valley opens up, sheltering the village of Irtem - a patch of green amongst the harsh red rock. The backdrop to the village shows some quite dramatic rock folding.

City of Cats

I can't recall if we saw many cats in M'dint Oumouch but we did have some attractive evening light at our camp site. The conical shaped peak is Adrar Kims - said to resemble a tajine pot.

Looking back from the col above the village of Tagragra, our camp of the previous day.

This is pretty smart for a Moroccan village - obviously the home of someone of some importance.
