|
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of photo with decorative border or frame .
Printed on the other side of this real photo postcard: "White House Photo Parlor, W. H. Burnham, Prop., 25 Clinton Ave., Cortland, N.Y."
A portrait of a young girl with glasses. Her dress has a lacy collar, she has a bow in her hair, and she's wearing a necklace and a lapel watch with chain.
The type of Azo stamp box (with four corner triangles pointing up) printed on the other side suggests a date that may be as early as 1904 to 1918.
Compare the oval border of this photo with the one used for Man's Portrait in Elaborate Border .

A cameo card for Jacob Haak Hain (1823-1891), who was a saddler in Reading, Pennsylvania. For a brief biography of Hain, see History of the Hain Family: Descendants of George and Veronica Hain (Reading Eagle Press, 1941), p. 65:
"Jacob Haak Hain. . . born 1822 [or 1823, according to his gravestone ], died 1891. On December 9, 1845, he married Mary Ann Goodhart, daughter of Jacob and Mary Ann (Beidler) Goodhart. She was born 1825, died 1898. He carried on a harness making business at 321 Penn Street, Reading and was Chairman of the Democratic Standing Committee, 1863-64; Clerk of the Court of Quarter Sessions of Berks County, 1872-75. Jacob, his wife, and their three children are buried in Charles Evans Cemetery."
Another of Hain's business cards (not a cameo card, however) is available as part of the Library Company of Philadelphia Digital Collections. See Jacob H. Hain, Manufacturer of Saddles, Harness, Bridles, Collars, Covers, Whips. No. 321 Penn Street, Reading, Pa.

A Sailor Strolling with His Family
02 Jul 2014 |
|
|
A real photo postcard for the Taylor-Tot Stroller Vintage Memories group.
A street photographer evidently snapped this photo of a sailor and his family as they walked past a W. T. Grant Co. store in some unidentified town. The sailor and his wife seem surprised--and perhaps even annoyed--by the photographer, but their daughter seems to be excitedly holding on to a toy as she enjoys the ride in her Taylor-Tot stroller.

For a different card featuring an owl instead of a dog, see Colburn's Philadelphia Mustard Trade Card c.1880 , a posting by Christopher Neapolitan on his Philadelphia Forgotten blog. Neapolitan's posting also includes photos of the Philadelphia site where Colburn's mustard was made, along with an account of the tragic death of Arthur T. Colburn, founder of the spice company that manufactured the mustard, and two of his three daughters in a yachting accident in 1901.

Milk Bottle Collar: Reminder and Order Form
22 Apr 2014 |
|
|
A milk bottle collar (for wrapping around the top of a bottle) that served both as a humorous reminder to return empty bottles and as an order form to ask the milkman to deliver specific items (back when dairies used to make regular home deliveries).
"Help keep down the cost of your milk by returning your empty bottles. Every unreturned bottle adds to the cost of delivering milk to your door. If you have any empties around your kitchen or basement, please return them."
"Lady, please send me home. Empty."
"Handy Order Blank. Place over return bottle. Please leave: ________. Name: ________. Address: ________."
For an enlargement of the middle panel with the cartoonish milk bottle, see Lady, Please Send Me Home!

Merry Christmas, Bob Hildrebrand, 1955
05 Dec 2013 |
|
|
A one-of-a-kind handpainted Christmas postcard made from some sort of art board. Postmarked in Chantilly, Virginia, Dec. 16, 1955. Sent to Lancaster, Pa., with a return address in York, Pa.
I believe that the artist who painted this postcard (it's not a print) was H. Robert Hildebrand, who was known for his paintings of dogs and other animals. See the following blog postings: York County Native H. Robert Hildebrand Was a Prolific Pet Portraitist and More Cute Dogs with Famous Owners Painted by York Native H. R. Hildebrand .
For another postcard painting by the same artist, see Noel, Bob Hildrebrand, 1956 .
