Flower Paintings with Lamp and Stereo

A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of lamps, chandeliers, candlesticks, and other types of lighting .
This is a color slide, circa 1959, that shows two flower paintings hanging on a wall. Below them is a Motorola "Stereophonic High Fidelity" console. Based on the online documentation for a similar model, the top of the stereo lifts up on the right for access to a record player inside. The six knobs on the left are labeled Function, Compensator, Loudness, Treble, Bass, and Balance. On top of the left side of the stereo are a decorative porcelain table lamp and a framed photo.
This is another slide from the collection of the Pipe-Smoking Man's family . I only recently realized that two other photos from the collection show different parts of this same room. A photo taken to the left of this one also captures part of the stereo console (see Flowering Plants and Groovy Curtains ). The door, wall thermostat, and chair in this photo are visible in a photo taken to the right of this one (see Still Life with Television ). The flower paintings may be the work of "Ethel", a relative of the Pipe-Smoking Man (see Ethel's Oil Painting, 1967 ).

A flowers photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park.
A slide dated April 1959 shows an elaborate planter stand with flowering plants (violets?) situated in front of a window. Trendy curtains with geometric shapes flank the stand on both sides, and other household furnishings--a lamp, stereo, framed photo, artwork on the wall--are also visible.
For another slide taken in the same house (with the same distinctive style of curtains), see Here's the Lady You Ordered! Where Do You Want Us to Put Her?

A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of appliances—refrigerators, stoves, washing machines, dishwashers, etc.
A snapshot of a woman standing next to the stove in her kitchen. In front of her is a dinette set that looks like it might date to the 1950s. The graininess of the photo gives the furnishings a mottled appearance.
For some other stoves, see Hooray! Let the Christmas Cooking Begin! and Cooking on the Regal Acorn .

An in the kitchen photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park.
This real photo postcard (circa 1900s-1910s) shows two women cooking with pots and pans on a Regal Acorn Range (the "Regal Acorn" name is part of the elaborate design on the front of the stove, though it's difficult to see in the photo). The Regal Acorn was manufactured by Rathbone, Sard, & Co., of Albany, New York, which touted it in a 1907 newspaper advertisement as "A Marvel of Convenience" that had a new "Lift Up Top Plate" that allowed "broiling and toasting to be done so easily, cleanly, and perfectly that it makes all other stoves and ranges seem mere make-shifts by comparison."

A vintage real photo postcard advertising a now old-fashioned type of washing machine.
"Good Morning, Sir: Do you want to know how to make money? It is easy, if you know how. I made and sold washers for 25 years. Many dealers have made big money with my washer. You failed to do much with it. May I help you? All my experience is at your service and will make money for you. Do you want it? Yours for success, J. H. Knoll, Reading, Pa."

In January 1934, the Philadelphia Electric Company (now PECO) was the first utility to license the Reddy Kilowatt character to promote electricity usage, according to Wikipedia. The early date may explain why Reddy's first name is misspelled as "Ready" on this advertising wheel chart , which demonstrates how far 5 cents worth of electricity goes in operating appliances like clocks, coffee percolators, and radios.
See also the other side of this wheel chart.

"How to Use Your Atomic Espresso Coffee Maker. British Made." Cover of the instruction booklet for an Atomic coffee machine , which was designed by Giordano Robbiati of Milan, Italy, in 1946.
The title of this booklet sounds like a question to me: "How to use your Atomic Espresso Coffee Maker?" My answer would be the same for any kind of atomic device: "Very carefully, of course!"
Whirlpool Humming Spinner

"Whirlpool Humming Spinner. RCA Whirlpool Home Appliances. Spin it!"
This 1960s advertising giveaway came with string and instructions for removing the pre-punched center disk, opening holes to thread the string through, and pulling on both ends of the string in order to spin the disk, which produced a humming or whirring sound (the illustrations of the boy and girl show how this worked). Homemade "button buzzer" versions use a button instead of a cardboard disk.
I was surprised to discover that this toy has a long and varied lineage. As Wikipedia explains in its buzzer (whirligig) article, "A buzzer (buzz, bullroarer, button-on-a-string) is an ancient mechanical device used for ceremonial purposes and as a toy. It is constructed by centering an object at the midpoint of a cord or thong and winding the cord while holding the ends stationary. The object is whirled by alternately pulling and releasing the tension on the cord. The whirling object makes a buzzing or humming sound, giving the device its common name."
Wikipedia also mentions that Native American made buzzers out of wood, bone, and stone for use in ceremonies and as toys as far back as 500 B.C. It's amazing to think that counterparts to the Whirlpool Humming Spinner were in existence more than twenty-five hundred years ago!
