Wash Out on Line in Camp

A washing / laundry photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park.
Handwritten caption: "Wash out on line in camp."
A real photo postcard addressed to "Mr. Irving C. Towsend, 400 M St., N.W., Local," and postmarked on September 7, 1908, in Washington D.C.
"Wash out on line in camp," of course, refers to the laundry drying on the clothesline that we see here in the photo. But it's also a punning allusion to a washout on a railway line, which happens when railroad tracks are undercut by erosion.
A popular comic postcard from the 1900s also makes this humorous connection (the only copy that I could quickly locate is a listing on the CardCow site ). Entitled "Washout on the Line," the card shows an illustration of a shirt hanging on a clothesline along with drawings of two telegrams. The first telegram says, "Wash out on line. Can not leave. Jim." The second one replies, "Buy a new shirt and come along. Jack."

A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of the secret lives of grown-ups (adults letting loose and having fun or possibly behaving badly with other adults; all in good taste, of course) .
Printed on the back of this real photo postcard: "Novelty Studio, 1118 First Ave., Seattle."
These three couples are ready for a party. The woman on the left, who's a little out of focus for some reason, is holding a ratchet noisemaker . The man in the back on the left is holding a BPO[E] ( Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks ) flag that's draped over the shoulder of the woman in the middle. The woman on the right is holding a mask (mouse over the image for a better look at the noisemaker, flag, and mask ). The man on the right has some sort of flag tucked under his right arm, and all of them except that man are wearing party or regular hats.
Were they attending a New Year's party at an Elks Lodge?
Smoking on the Porch

A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of hands in pockets .
A man stands on a porch as he smokes a cigar. He's dressed in a suit, and he has his right hand in his pocket. His left hand is holding the cigar, and there's a wedding band on his ring finger.
A sled, propped up against the porch railing, is partially visible on the left, and there are piles of snow on the ground beyond the porch. It must be a sunny winter day judging by the bright washed-out appearance of the house next door.
This is an unused real photo postcard with a divided back. There's no message, address, or postmark on the verso. A Solio stamp box (with diamonds in the corners and "Place Stamp Here" in the middle) is printed on the other side, which indicates that the card may date to sometime between 1907 and the 1920s.
