Flying High over Yarmouth

04 Nov 2024 4 140
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of Watch the skies! -- UFOs, airplanes, birds, clouds, or anything else that might be up there . The hard-to-read handwritten note on the other side of this divided-back, real photo postcard says, "Rose sitting, [Lill?] Jennings standing, ... and myself at Yarmouth." The Yarmouth location and the roundels on the wings of the airplane suggest that this is a souvenir photo from England. But what's the meaning of "O.K" and "R.U." on the fuselage? And was there actually a three-seater biplane that looked something like this?

Man in a Biplane

20 Apr 2017 2 3 661
A man pretends to steer an airplane in this early twentieth-century real photo postcard that's survived the years despite some damage. The painted plane that he's piloting may be a Curtiss Model D biplane, circa 1911. For a similar photo with a younger pilot, see Inflight Infant in an Early Biplane (below).

Three Guys in a Plane over Paris

26 Jul 2016 6 2 1119
Looks like the skyline below the plane is intended to depict Paris. Among the recognizable landmarks are the Eiffel Tower, the Seine River, and the two towers of the old Trocadéro Palace , which was demolished in 1935.

Inflight Infant in an Early Biplane

20 Apr 2017 3 1 640
An infant for the ABC Group (4/20/2017). A rather dark real photo postcard with a young child who doesn't appear too excited to be steering a painted version of an early biplane that looks similar to a 1911 Curtiss Model D . For another vintage novelty photo that uses the same backdrop, see Man in a Biplane (below).

Three Dapper Gents in an Airship

16 Mar 2018 1 544
A real photo postcard showing three dapper gentlemen in suits, ties, and straw hats pretending to ride in an airship in a photo studio located in Douglas, Isle of Man. Notice how the pilot is carefully operating the fake control lever as a cigarette dangles from his mouth. I just hope that the gas bag above him doesn't contain dangerously flammable hydrogen! Printed on the back: "F. Johnson, Fort William, Douglas, I.O.M."

Flying High in Pittsburgh

13 May 2019 2 1 560
A flying photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park. Printed on the back of this real photo postcard: "The Colonial Studio, 137 Sixth St., Pittsburgh, Pa., U.S.A."

We Don't Care If We Never Go Back, Indianapolis, I…

25 May 2020 2 3 364
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of my old pal—depicting friends, buddies, pals enjoying each other's company . Sign: "We don't care if we never go back." Banner: "Indianapolis." An unused real photo postcard of two friends pretending to be in a hot air balloon as they pose for a souvenir photo in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Noko stamp box on the other side suggests that it may date between 1907 and 1929. I have other cards with photos of the fellow on the left that were postmarked in 1911. See also I Don't Care If I Never Come Back .

Flying High in Colorado

01 Mar 2014 2 1 1643
The three aerodynamic fellows who are peering over at us from this souvenir real photo postcard are pretending to fly their biplane over the thriving metropolis of Denver, Colorado, circa 1910.

Spirit of St. Louis

A real photo postcard. "Lucky Lindy. Spirit of St. Louis. X211."

Soldiers Aloft

11 Sep 2013 2 1361
A real photo postcard with a couple of usually down-to-earth military types mugging for the camera and pretending to drive (look at that big steering wheel!) an aeroplane.

High over Zurich, Sept. 22, 1910

12 Aug 2013 5 1817
Posted to the Vintage Photos Theme Park group for "rattan/bamboo/wicker" theme week. Although the photo is obviously contrived, the gondola--with attached ropes and sandbags--looks like a real wicker basket similar in appearance to those used for hot air balloons. A real photo postcard addressed on the back to: "Mr. and Mrs. J. [Paules?], Oakryn, Pennsylvania, U.S. America." The message on the back: "Sept. 22nd, 1910. We are spending the afternoon at Zurich on our way home from Switzerland, had a lovely drive. The lady in the balloon with us is the one we have been staying with at St. Gallen. Love, Leslie and Ethel."

Flying High Over Dallas

Buzzing the Beach in a Biplane, Los Angeles, Calif…

26 Jun 2013 5 2 2401
Fortunately, the two aeronautical gents pictured here in this souvenir real photo postcard are safely ensconced in a photographer's studio and aren't actually risking catastrophe by flying low over the heads of oblivious beachgoers. The "Los Angeles" and "California" pennants hanging on the plane presumably identify the location.
