"Putnam Fadeless Dyes-Tints."
A late 1920s paper advertising fan with a wooden handle. The elaborate Art Nouveau design of the fan features a green nymph in flowing robes who's using Putnam Fadeless Dyes and Tints to paint colors onto the wings of a quizzical-looking butterfly. Two other leafy green creatures kneel on either side as they hold bowls of Putnam products. Purple gnarly tree trunks and branches along with green leaves frame the fantastical scene.

Merry Christmas

A small Victorian-era greeting card that's about the size of a modern business card. This is a generic "stock card" that could have served as a calling card, advertising trade card, reward of merit, or--as in this case--greeting card, depending on what was printed on it. The colors of the leaves in the illustration, of course, suggest an autumn theme rather than a winter-time Christmas celebration.

"What color eyes do you love best? Perhaps blue and light hair. Send me a card [to say] when you will be over. All O.K. but mamma has the grippe. Here comes Tom. Campers by the creek. Jolly time. Tell Alice 'Hello' for me. Ever yours, Mariett."
Postmark on back: Hubbard, Ohio, Oct. [6?], 1908.
Addressed on back to: "Miss Mina Clark, Hubbard, Ohio. R.F.D. #2. c/o Mr. Taylor Carnahan."
Handwritten message on back: "10-6, '08. Hello Kidds! Where are you and what are you doing anyway? Why did you not come over as you said? I have 'sore eyes' looking for you. Would you be the doctor? How are the folks?"
My Heart Has Turned from Red to Grey

My heart has turned from red to grey
And is heavy as lead on account of you;
For it's loved you long, and it's loved you true,
And your coldness has turned it a dismal hue.
(This handmade greeting card isn't really a vinegar valentine --it's downright sulfuric!)
