25 Jan 2021 1 2 363
A signs photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park. Sign: "Candies, Ice Cream, and [Soda?]." Five guys pose for a picture in this unused real photo postcard (the Azo stamp box--with four corner triangles pointing up--on the other side of the card suggests a date that may be as early as 1904 to 1918).

Punxsutawney Phil Chocolates for Groundhog Day, Fe…

I spotted this store display of Punxsutawney Phil groundhogs rendered in solid milk chocolate at a Gardners Candies store in State College, Pennsylvania, last year. I'm pleased to report today on Groundhog Day , February 2, 2019, that the esteemed rodent has predicted an early spring this year. Despite CNN's cynicism—see Groundhog predicts an early spring. Don't get too excited, he's usually wrong —I'm optimistic that the long national nightmare of last week's polar vortex is finally over.

Cracker Jack Riddles

03 Jun 2017 1 951
Cracker Jack Riddle cards like this one were issued in sets of twenty in 1906. They included well-worn humorous riddles that circulated widely in books and newspapers at the time. A book of Conundrums, Riddles, and Puzzles by Dean Rivers that appeared in 1903, for instance, contained all the riddles on this card and probably most or all of the ones on the other nineteen cards. Cracker Jack It is not often one can find A candy good for body and mind, But our old doctor says it's true That "Cracker Jack" is good for you. Hope Fire Co. No. 2 Bazaar and Fair

11 Apr 2018 2 466
The 1893 edition of Boyd's Directory of Harrisburg and Steelton , p. 29, lists a "Hope Steam Fire Engine Co., No 2," in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, with an address on "2d [Street] bet[ween] State and North," and I believe that this is the same "Hope Fire Co. No. 2" described here, with a fire house located at "Second and North Streets." Although the fire company itself no longer exists, the "Hope Station" building is now the Fire House Restaurant . "Bazaar and fair, Hope Fire Co. No. 2, March 18 to 25 inclusive. We cordially invite you, your family, and friends to attend this bazaar and fair, which will be held in the parlor of fire house, Second and North Streets. Something doing every minute. Donations of cakes and candies will be appreciated. Admission free, everyone welcome. Raysor, printer."

Handlebar Mustache Disguise Kit

03 Oct 2013 1 1 987
Despite the impressive illustration, this small Cracker Jack prize, constructed of multi-layered cardboard, required kids to pull the layers apart, push out die-cut pieces, and then stick the pre-gummed areas of the pieces together in order to form a less-than-convincing moustache disguise. Text printed on the back of the kit (the numbers and letters refer to a small accompanying diagram): "Instructions. Back of pieces 1 & 2 are gummed. Push out pieces 1 & 3. Moisten back of end marked A on 1 and stick on end marked A of [on] 3." Todd Franklin (Neato Coolville) also has a copy of this over on Flickr: Cracker Jack Handlebar Mustache Disguise Kit .
