Mother and Child

A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of infant adoration (babies with those who love them) .
This is an unused real photo postcard with a nicely lit portrait of a doting mother and her young child.
The Azo stamp box (with four corner triangles pointing up) printed on the other side indicates that the photo may date to sometime between 1904 and 1918.

A mothers and babies photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park.
A fashionably dressed mother with a gentle smile poses for a picture as she holds her baby, who's staring in wide-eyed astonishment at something off camera.
This is an undated real photo postcard from Paris, France (based on a partial address— Ave. de Neuilly —stamped on the other side).

It's My Treat

|
|
Printed on the back: "This card is a genuine photograph, hand colored. Made in the United States."
Perhaps this real photo postcard was intended as a birth announcement, since it used to be (or still is?) customary for fathers to hand out cigars to friends, relatives, and coworkers when a child was born. Otherwise, it seems rather strange to imagine a smiling infant passing out cigars like this.

Written on the back of this photo: "Dennis & Little Francis. Thanksgiving."
Baby in a Crock
02 Sep 2015 |
|
|
Markings on the front of the crock: "12. Macomb Pottery Co., manufacturers, Macomb, Ill."
An infant poses for a picture in a large 12-gallon stoneware crock. This obviously seems similar in concept to the more common baby-in-a-basin photos. For examples, see my own Baby in a Basin, Photographed by Galen Piper, Bainbridge, Pa. , photo (below) and elinor04's Baba a lavórban [Baby in a Washbasin] photo.

A temper tantrum photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park.
A 1906 Bamforth postcard with a photo by Robert McCrum shows a not-so-dulcet duet of unhappy infants.
Baby in a Basin, Photographed by Galen Piper, Bain…

Babies in wash basins seemed to be a trend in photographs and advertisements at one time. See Richard Sheaff's discussion of Baby in a Basin on his amazing Sheaff : ephemera site.
I haven't located any information regarding Galen Piper, a local photographer in Bainbridge, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In this photo, a scene with a house, fence, and tree is visible on what appears to be a hand-drawn backdrop.

A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of things they won't let us do any more .
In this undated photo, dad is smoking a pipe as he and mom pose with little Sidecar Susie.
Inflight Infant in an Early Biplane

|
|
|
An infant for the ABC Group (4/20/2017).
A rather dark real photo postcard with a young child who doesn't appear too excited to be steering a painted version of an early biplane that looks similar to a 1911 Curtiss Model D .
For another vintage novelty photo that uses the same backdrop, see Man in a Biplane (below).
Two Relics of the Antediluvian Period

|
A mothers photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park.
Nelson P. Smith displayed a playful sense of humor with a mischievous message on this real photo postcard dated April 10, 1910. I'm guessing that the photo is a portrait of his wife and son.
Mrs. Matilda Maria Thomas
Exhibit No. 16390
Ladies and Gent:
You have here before you two relics of the Antediluvian period just discovered in a small town, situated in a swamp in Florida, supposed to be the descendants of mound builders or some extinct race. Look like mother and son. Ages supposed to be son, 4 mos., April 10/10.

A photo of a cute child on a colorful celluloid medallion. For additional examples, see my Celluloid Photographic Medallions album or head over to Flickr to take a gander at the George Eastman House's collection of Celluloid Medallions & Buttons .
Pouting Baby with Hidden Mother's Arm, Harrisburg,…

|
|
|
"John D. Lemer, 1218 North 3rd St., Harrisburg, Pa."
For the Vintage Photos Theme Park, a hand in the photo with the person cut off .*
For more of the same, track down a copy of Linda Fregni Nagler and Gioni Massimiliano's book, The Hidden Mother (London: MACK, 2013), which is a compilation of over 1,000 vintage photos of mothers attempting to remain hidden as they comfort children who are being photographed.
*I try to sort through my collection in order to post a brand new photo for each week's theme, but I came up short this week and had to use one that I had previously posted elsewhere on Ipernity.
Earl Is as Naughty as He Can Be
22 Aug 2013 |
|
|
|
This real photo postcard doesn't bear a stamp, postmark, or date but was addressed to: "Mrs. Daniel Ohlinger. From Mrs. Edwin Ohlinger."
Handwritten message on back: "Dear Mother, We are all well at present, hoping this card will find you all the same. Earl is as naughty as he can be. Try and come down. I must close--the mailman is coming."
As far as I can determine from searching the Web, it was Earl's mother--Mrs. Edwin Ohlinger--who wrote the message, and she and her son lived in Berks County, Pennsylvania. I'm not certain, however, who the baby might be (Earl's brother or sister, perhaps?), what band Earl might have played in, or where Earl's grandmother--Mrs. Daniel Ohlinger--lived.
All I Got for Christmas Was a Bug!

Mouse over the image for a closer view of the bug toy .
Either that's a giant mutant insect getting ready to attack that poor kid or it's a toy of some sort, perhaps something like the mechanical crawling beetle pictured in the Victoria and Albert Museum's image collection.
