The island is almost completely devoid of vegetation. A work of acacia plantation has been made in the flatter areas. The success of these plantations have been very limited.

Island is very arid with only 80–130 mm falling annually, somewhat higher only near the tops of the few mountains. Due to lack of rain, agriculture is at a subsistence level

Mindelo is in the bay of Porto Grande, natural harbor formed by the underwater crater of a volcano about 4 km in diameter.
