The aerodrome was achieved in 1983. Before that, the island depended on ships for supplies and travelling. Long seastorms sometimes made impossible sea connections for over two months... Hard times for the 300 to 400 inhabitants of this 17 km2 island of Azores.

Less than 30 km separate these two islands from Azores. That peak is 2351 metres high and the highest point of the Portuguese territory. The photo was taken on the aerodrome of São Jorge, at Queimada, between the aircraft and the terminal.
