Buçaco Battle brought about the defeat of General Massena's troops in 1810, within the 3rd napoleonic invasion of Portugal. This monument was erected in 1873 and its location and characteristics of lightning rod caused its destruction by a thunderstorm in 1876. It was reconstructed in 1879.
