Initially it was destinated to the monks of the Order of the Hospitallers; during the Renaissance period it was affected to the Order of Malta, until being abandoned in the 18th century. Restored in the 20th century, it became a charm hotel at Flor da Rosa - a civil parish of Crato.

Now it makes part of a charm hotel (pousada), with access from Terreiro do Paço, Vila Viçosa.
