In 1908 a lighthouse was installed at Serreta Point, western Terceira, Azores. Its light issued from petrol combustion. It was electrified in 1958. It was severely damaged during the 1980 devastating earthquake, being replaced by the lighthouse of Cacilhas, Almada (on Tagus riverside facing Lisbon, inactive since 1978), in 1983. In 2004 it was replaced by an automatic one, with photovoltaic panels. Almada municipality succeeded in having back the former lighthouse of Cacilhas, claimed as local heritage, before the Navy sent it to scrap. In 2009 it was reinstalled at Cacilhas, as a memory of the past.
