A "marmoiral" is a funerary monument. This one stands on the route of the funerary procession of Queen Saint Mafalda. This queen was the daughter of Sancho I of Portugal and the wife of Henry I of Castilla. She died in 1256 and her body was brought in procession to be buried in the Arouca Monastery. This marmoiral marks the passage of the procession in this place - Boavista Street, Castelo de Paiva.

This bridge over Douro River collapsed in March 4th 2001, dragging a bus and two cars into the water, which was fatal to all the occupants. Uncontrolled sand extraction destabilised one pillar, causing the tragedy. The bridge right behind was built in 2005. Both connect the municipalities of Castelo de Paiva (on the right) and Penafiel (on the left).
