This magpie comes by daily and takes a stab at getting to the suet from underneath. He holds on for a moment but cannot sustain the attachment. It does not deter him and he is getting better at his strategy.

Three juvenile magpies are hanging out on this fence. They grow fast and after a month of hatching they group with other juveniles. It looks like the one in the middle is putting on weight faster than the others. Happy Fence Friday

Ephemeral for The Sunday Challenge. A blink of the eye is ephemeral, it does not last long. I caught this bird mid-blink. Children grow up very fast, especially if you are a bird. This juvenile Magpie is at that awkward stage but will not be there for long. Soon the tail feathers will be long and the fuzzy white feathers will be smooth and sleek. Two examples in one for the word ephemeral, this week's Sunday Challenge.

The cat is more interested in the water bowl on a nice day than entering into mortal combat with a magpie.

TSC - Fun with White Balance On this photo (original in note) I changed the white balance to tungsten to get the blue effect. In processing in Lightroom I took a brush, (as one would do for selective colour) and set it for a more normal white balance for the scene. With the brush I brushed the tree branch the bird is perched upon, his white feathers, his beak and the CD. I also had some fun with an older picture, photographed outside of our challenge week. It is also in the notes and on Not the Sunday Challenge. We have a couple of juvenile magpies learning the ropes in our back yard. Notice his baby feathers and that his (or her) tail feathers are not yet fully grown. They are mature enough to hop/fly from branch to branch but little more. During a strong wind the other day it was amusing to see one of them holding his balance while balancing on the fence. The parents are never far away and nag constantly at their young. I think once this one learns to fly he will get his own Discman.

The magpies and crows descended today on the street in front of my house to pick at the remains of a pigeon who did not cross the road carefully. Another link in the chain: should have walked at the walk sign.
