Today is world photography day. Here is my submission from my backyard. Smoke, smoke and more smoke. A cedar border in our yard and the mountain across the Columbia River in Trail, British Columbia, Canada. Our air quality index is currently: Hazardous 320 AQI US On the British Columbia Air Quality site, we are at 10+. Photo taken shortly after noon PST. No clouds. The masks we have been using for Covid are very useful when the atmosphere gets this thick.

In the Bleak Mid-winter

30 Jan 2023 14 5 266
Trail, British Columbia, Canada. A scene by the Columbia River in the city park. Next to the river is the economic reason the town exists, the smelter. I love photographing it with the mountain background. My wife photographed this scene and I processed it. I desaturated everything except the leaves on these plants.

Kokanee Salmon

22 Sep 2017 6 2 418
This fish is one of many that have come to the spawning grounds for the Kokanee salmon in late August. A photo of the spawning creek is in a note. The Kokanee are landlocked and do not go to sea. They live their entire life in Kootenay Lake and in the rivers and creeks that feed and drain the lake.

We passed this forest fire near Moyie Lake, British Columbia, Canada. It has been a record year of forest fires and the smoke has been lingering over Alberta, where we live, all summer long. This fire spread and is now threatening populated areas.

Bench With a View

16 Aug 2015 20 24 831
This zinc and lead smelter is the lifebood of the small town of Trail, British Columbia. It is the reason for the existence of this town. In the early 90s the smelter was changed to hydro electric power and coal was retired. The environment immediately improved. Most of what you see coming from the smokestacks is steam. Between the bench and the smelter is the Columbia River. The Sunday Challenge. A person-less bench. Sight and Sound: Pictures and Music. "Holding Hands" by Jessie Smelter. After some searching I found this song which fits with many park benches where dreams are dreamt together. Smelter's song in front of a smelter was irresistible. youtu.be/56bQaofhDOQ A more complete view is in the notes.

Trail B.C. Smelter

07 Aug 2015 8 1 527
This zinc and lead smelter is the lifebood of the small town of Trail, British Columbia. It is the reason for the existence of this town. In the early 90s the smelter was changed to hydro electric power and coal was retired. The environment immediately improved. Most of what you see coming from the smokestacks is steam. This photograph is SOOC. The two large smokestacks look as though they have been processed in to the picture. It looks a little strange but this is how it looked to the camera.
