BR0216 BRANDON - [BURNED-OUT ASYLUM]

16 May 2017 259
POSTCARD Date: Posted, but date unclear. Publisher / Photographer: Halpin's Drug Store Notation: On November 4, 1910 the Mantoba's Brandon Asylum for the Insane was completely destroyed by fire. Over 700 patients and staff were safely evacuated. One woman, a patient, somehow separated from the group and perished from exposure. For more information on the asylum fire, see: www.mhs.mb.ca/docs/mb_history/21/brandonasylumfire.shtml

BR215 BRANDON - [CROWD AT FAIR]

19 Dec 2016 1 220
POSTCARD Date: Posted August 1, 1905. Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified Notation: The card was posted from Brandon, but there is nothing obvious in the image or in any text that confirms that this image was taken there. This was some kind of public event. Hard to see in the image, there is the side of a large tent to the left side of the image. (just behind the two girls in the foreground, a large wooden stake is holding down a guy-wire.) The seller of this postcard indicated that first nations people were pictured. I am not so certain. The women in the back centre, I think, could also be wearing clothing from eastern Europe.

BR0214 BRANDON - BUFFET, PRINCE EDWARD HOTEL

14 May 2016 1 173
POSTCARD Date: Not evident. Not Posted. Publisher / Photographer: Valentine & Sons #109747 Notation: I am not sure what kind of a "buffet" this is. It looks like this is a long bar likely used to prepare alcoholic beverages to patrons - not by a behind-the-bar bartender, but by several individuals who would access the libations in the cupboards, pour them into one of a variety of glasses on the counter and ring up bills at the cash registers. There is a pail-like container seen on the floor, behind the left-hand chair. could it be a spittoon?

BR0213 BRANDON - KENNEDY'S PHARMACY

30 Jan 2016 3 155
POSTCARD Date: Posted October 5, 1910 to Lunenburg, ON. Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified Notation: I really liked the look of this early advertising postcard! There is only one postal stamp on the card & it is Ottawa. So, I am wondering if the card was sent from Brandon to Lunenburg via Ottawa - or if it just happened to be a Brandon card that was sent from Ottawa to Lunenburg? The message on the front reads; "Say what is the prise of Eggs & Butter out home[?] be sure & keep thanksgiving to go out home[.] I will be out if nothing happens[.] I won't be able to get back so you come out if you's can. Bye Bye" Anna The message on the reverse reads; "Dear Sister, If you's can spare the potatoes write and let us know when you will send them[.] Say we are getting a couple of barrels apples from out home[.] Say you's can send potatoes with them by freight.[.] How did you get over the flu[?] I haven't got over it yet. It is raining to beet the band to-night. O I hate this weather it makes me home sick. but I got a letter from mother to-day so I don't feel to bad. bye bye Annabelle"
