The Australian Pelican (Pelecanus conspicillatus), with a wing span of more than 3 meters, the longest bill — up to 40 centimeters long — of any known bird, and a weight of up to 13 kilograms, is the largest species of pelicans in the world. The Hooded Plover (Thinornis rubricollis) is endemic to Australia. The eastern subspecies Thinornis rubricollis rubricollis is restricted to the coastline and numbers 4,500 birds. cf. www.iucnredlist.org/search/details.php/40246/all On Kangaroo Island, less than 200 of these small and shy shore birds are left. cf. www.tomm.info/media/contentresources/docs/FactSheet_Env_H... So it was a real privilege to spot one on Emu Beach.
