A large table-like glacial erratic with a portion of the West Block of Grasslands National Park in the background. Taking this image required a hike from an entrance to the park, which is located in the flat area in the far background. It's a huge park!

This large stone - called a glacial erratic - sits at the edge of a farmer's field, and close to the Doukhobor Caves, a National Historic Site. Doukhobor settlers lived in dug out caves on the side of the North Saskatchewan River Valley for a year or two until they could build a house. The mural depicts Doukhobor women pulling a plough, while a man at the back supervises.

Large rocks like the one in the foreground are uncommon among the various rocks scattered across the surface of the land in Grasslands National Park. An online search suggests this rock may be quartzite. Don’t use this image on websites, blogs or other media without explicit permission. Copyright William Armstrong. 2020
