room to graze

Ranching is an important activity in southwestern Saskatchewan. Cattle has plenty of room to graze under the big sky.

grazing under the sky

Three favourite horses that I always visit when I'm in the Qu'Appelle Valley near Lumsden. They often come over the the fence by the road, but this time they were busy grazing, so I decided to include the dramatic sky above them.

eyes on the photographer

Another view of a lovely horse grazing in a pasture near Lumsden, Saskatchewan. Although the horse was grazing intently, I had the feeling that it was also sizing up the photographer before approaching closer.

three grazers

Three horses that I visit a few times a year, usually grazing in a field just outside Lumsden Saskatchewan. This image was taken in mid-September, as the foliage was beginning to change colour.

When I took this the horse was just getting used to me standing on the other side of the fence where it was grazing. Later, the horse would come closer to eat the grasses that I offered as a good will gesture.

a pair of bison grazing

Even better than capturing images of a bison grazing is the opportunity to capture two bison grazing. This image was taken in the West Block of Grasslands National Park.

This bull bison stopped grazing for a few moments to determine if I was a threat or not. Bison have an acute sense of smell, but their sight is not good, so he took a few moments to decide I was just another guy with a camera, and resumed grazing.

time to move!

After a few moments of watching the photographer the leader of this group decided it was time to flee. Most of the antelope followed quickly, but there were a couple of laggards.

skittish pronghorn

This group of pronghorn antelope had gathered to graze in a field beside Highway 21, south of Leader, Saskatchewan. Some show concern about the photographer standing beside the highway.

A bull grazing by a highway, but taking time to check out a photographer standing in a nearby ditch. Taken near Big Beaver, Saskatchewan.

Bison pair grazing

A rare experience for me of seeing two bison grazing together. Most of the sightings I've experienced is of a solitary animal, or a herd of several dozen. While these two are quietly grazing, at least one of them seems to be aware that I am there, and is keeping an eye on me. It is satisfying to see bison in Grasslands National Park, an area that used to be home to thousands of these beasts, and where they have flourished since being reintroduced.
