all about the sky

02 Nov 2023 1 48
Rays from the sun coming through clouds near the end of a day of active weather, as seen just west of Regina, Saskatchewan.

a setting sun in hiding

31 Oct 2023 3 2 50
After a day of unsettled weather I decided to drive west of Regina to see what the sunset might look like. From the side of a grid road I saw this cloud formation obscuring the sun about 90 minutes before sunset.

fiery sunrise over Wascana Lake

A sunrise over the marshy end of Wascana Lake, with ducks, Canada Geese and White American Pelicans looking for breakfast.

barn and big sky 3

A barn or equipment shed surrounded by a maturing crop, viewed from a back road in early August.

O what a tangled web 2

Water droplets form on a spider's web spun within the framework of a bridge over Wascana Creek in Regina.

Wascana Creek in fog

04 Sep 2023 5 3 43
A single light illuminates a walking path along one side of Wascana Creek on a foggy morning. This was taken from a footbridge that is popular with dog walkers, joggers and the occasional photographer.

impressionist pelican

04 Sep 2023 47
I saw this American white pelican on a foggy morning, swimming along Wascana Creek. As I was editing it it seemed to become more like an impressionist painting, so I explored some editing settings I don't often use. I decided to stop with this image.

sun & sunflower

03 Sep 2023 2 2 47
Roaming around a community garden I saw an opportunity to capture a sunflower and the rising sun in the same frame.

forks & spades

01 Sep 2023 2 62
Garden forks and spades hanging on the wall of a storage shed at a community garden. The recycled golf balls covering the spikes on the wall are a nice touch. I also noted how clean these garden tools are. These gardeners take pride in their work.

tools at the ready 2

31 Aug 2023 3 2 49
The various gardeners who have plots at a local community garden leave their garden tools stored by a storage shed, apparently on the honour system. But then, if you steal a shovel or a rake, doesn't that just mean you have to do some work with it?

tools at the ready

I found this scene at a local community garden. I was attracted by the bright contrasting colours, and the idea of work completed, but of more work to do again, later.

hollyhock close-up

29 Aug 2023 3 57
Just a short walk from my home several hollyhock plants grow along the south-facing wall of a building. The plants grow to more than two metres tall, and produce yellow, red and pink flowers. On warm evenings bees are busily collecting pollen, but they are elusive. This is a good second-best.

bee resting

27 Aug 2023 3 64
Walking around a community garden on a cool morning I saw this tricoloured bee nestled inside a flower. I think the bee may have spent the night there, because it did not move when I came close with my macro lens.

kernels and clouds

Harvesting operations of grains and oilseeds usually begin in Saskatchewan in August. This image was taken in the third week of August, and the crop looks to be ready for the combine. This image was taken at the edge of a field north of Pense, on the Regina Plains.

horse+rider-Mind Garden

17 Aug 2023 1 41
This image shows one panel of the metal sculpture created by the late Joe Fafard, which he titled Mind Garden. The central figures appear to be a horse and a rider, perhaps depicting a member of the original North West Mounted Police. although he appears to be riding side-saddle on a rocking horse. Fafard is perhaps making a comment about the role of the NWMP in helping to settle western Canada.

rising sun+Mind Garden

14 Aug 2023 1 42
A metal sculpture titled Mind Garden by the late Joe Fafard stands in Wascana Park, near the University of Regina. Fafard considered this work his personal Stonehenge. Each panel contains a large amount of detail, and tells a story. However, the entire sculpture deserves to be shown next to the rising sun.

Wascana Lake - sunrise reflected 3

A sunrise over a calm Wascana Lake.

Wascana sunrise-cloud reflecting

13 Aug 2023 42
The sunrise was blocked by a layer of cloud near the horizon, but the did light up the cloud projecting upward, creating a reflection on Wascana Lake.
