As wintry weather lingers, here is a look back at a field of canola ripening under the big sky, in late July.

A barn or shed which I think is little-used, surrounded by a maturing crop at the end of July. This scene is typical of the Regina Plains in southern Saskatchewan, with large fields under the big Prairie sky.

Using a macro lens is challenging; flowers move in the breeze. Achieving a good depth of field is something I have to work at constantly. The DOF in this image is just ok, but I like the bokeh around it.

The Prairies offer plenty of opportunities to test drive a wide angle lens, such as this 15mm manual focus unit. The barn on the left is surrounded by crops, and appears to be unused, except perhaps for storage. This image was taken west of Regina and south of the Trans-Canada Highway.

I was initially attracted to this flower by the bright red, and then by the dark colour inside, and then finally by the centre part, which looks to me like a round cake with pink icing.

A bergamot in the back garden. Bergamot blossoms usually seem to be red, but this shows a violet colour.

A bergamot growing in my garden. This is the first season that the plant had produced a lot of blossoms. I have noticed more bees in the garden now that the plants are blossoming.

As I prepared to photograph the barn three horses came from behind a group of trees to see what I was up to. After inspection they decided the grass was more interesting.

The hosta plants in my back garden make lovely blossoms, year after year. While they last they are lovely.

There is a profusion of hollyhocks near my home. On warm summer evenings the bees are busy gathering pollen, but they are a challenge to photograph before they move on to the next blossom.
