Galot cross at Marguerite Lake
03 Sep 2020 |
|
|
This old wooden cross leans up against a fence surrounding a small graveyard on a high point of land overlooking Marguerite Lake, near Indian Head, Saskatchewan. Someone recently had placed simple metal markers identifying the people buried there, since the inscriptions on the marble headstones were only partly legible. All of the names were of French origin, including a Marguerite, who may have been the matriarch of the group that settled nearby. The metal marker closest to the wooden cross was for Charles Galot, 1865-1896, so I presume the wood cross may have been his original grave marker.

Ruzicka house view

Another view of an abandoned poplar log and mud house located on a rise with a fine view of the surrounding fields. The house, as I've been told, was built in 1912 by a settler named Ruzicka. The closest community to the house is Silton, near Last Mountain Lake.

what is that?

I had just packed my gear in my vehicle and begun driving when I saw a mother deer with her doe by the side of the road. By the time I stopped and readied my camera the two had moved from the ditch onto the road. The mother was obviously cautious and watchful, but also curious enough to have a long look. I spoke quietly to them, which may or may not have an effect. Eventually the mother headed across the ditch, over the fence and into the field, with the doe following. A lovely encounter in the RM of Longlaketon, Saskatchewan.

A few through the front window of a house with thick mud walls and poplar logs, built about 1912. Perhaps when it was built or shown after, an addition provided shelter for small farm animals. This view shows the stove, the entry into the animal shelter and the main entry door, to the right.

abandoned house in Qu'Appelle Valley 8

An abandoned house beside the Qu'Appelle River, in the valley of the same name. Even though Lumsden and Craven are close by, and there are houses and farm buildings on both sides of the valley, this house has a lonely and isolated look to it.

Old Stone Church 1
13 Aug 2020 |
|
|
|
The Old Stone Church, according to the sign in front, was built in 1892 using volunteer labour. The fieldstone used was readily available in the area close to the Qu'Appelle Valley. The church is located in a rural area, close to the town of Abernathy. Most of the settlers in the area were likely Scots, including some with masonry experience.

I first saw these rail cars on a siding near Tuxrod, Saskatchewan, on August 2, 2020. Ten days later they had not moved, so I decided to take more photos from a different perspective.
