a tree and a bale

I stop for trees and hay bales! While traveling toward Pine Cree Regional Park I stopped to take some photos of this lone tree, with the south end of the Cypress Hills and a spectacular sky in the background.

Pine Cree Regional Park is located at the bottom of a deep coulee, which is surrounded by mostly flat crop land, which makes the entry into the park steep and dramatic. The flat lan is mostly treeless, while the coulee bottom is shaded by trees.

A view of a bench made with four concrete blocks and a slab of wood, located in a sheltered area of what was a Franciscan retreat house near Lumsden, Saskatchewan. This was taken in mid-afternoon on a mid-January day, with the low light filtering through the trees.

ground fog in the coulee

Staying over with a friend in Swift Current, in the morning I noticed fog lying in the coulee to the north of his house. It was mid-April, so the trees had not yet leafed out and most of the grasses were still beige and brown. There was little wind, which is unusual for Swift Current, so the fog just lay at the bottom of the coulee.

coulee and homestead-late April

A view of a coulee with an abandoned house and barn in the distance. This was taken in late April, near Indian Head, Saskatchewan, after the snow had melted, but before the plants had begun to turn the land green. I wonder what the long-ago homesteader thought when he chose this location to build his home.

Trees and bushes grow in the coulees where a bit more precipitation collects during the spring and summer. When autumn arrives the leaves on the trees turn to yellow and gold.

An old home located partway down the side of a valley, giving it some shelter from the wind. The surrounding bush and trees would also help cut the wind.

a yellow tree, closer

The bright leaves on the tree that caught my eye is on private land, so I was shooting from the fence line. Despite the windy, dusty conditions I changed lenses to get a closer shot of the tree and the butte behind it.
